multiple games in 1 blog

First off, please allow me to Thank You for all the hard work You have put into this most valuable tool. Chess players around the globe, couldn't thank you enough for the time and energy you've invested into Your ChessFlash player.

My request is something along the lines of me wanting to create a blog in my myspace account that will allow me to display my top 5 and worst 5 games of '09. Nothing special, I just thought it would be a nice place for my friends to go check them out in one place, rather than multiple blogs. And after finding the ChessFlash player a couple months back.... I couldn't resist trying to create such a blog / post in the forums I frequent

I tried a test blog, and after posting the first game and previewing, all looked fine. but after copying and pasting code from a second game, it doesn't seem to work. (2nd game is broken, only a slide bar is present) Is there something I should be doing on my end to make this a reality, or is this something that creates 'confusing code' and the browser won't interpret correctly?

eitherway... Thanks again for all you do. Take Care & God Bless,

multiple games in 1 blog

There are many examples of doing this. If you still have the failed attempt that you could point me to I may be able to diagnose the problem.

The one thing that comes to mind is if you are using the show/hide option and did a copy-n-paste from one game to create another (just changing the pgn data) instead of generating the code from the chess flash quick publisher or web site. Show/hide requires a unique id for each game on a page. A unique id is generated for each when using the chessflash publishing tools but would be duplicated if you used copy-n-paste instead.

thanks

Thanks for the help, but I didn't think to try using the show/hide option and in fact I thought you were suggesting to try that option. however, now... neither game is present and clicking on either 'show chess board' link produces a 'bad request'. That may be what you were talking about above. here's that link.

http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=3069115...

here is what I was trying to do initially

copy pgn data from a ChessCircle.net complete games list, and paste it into ChessFlash PGN Viewer Quick Publisher. After clicking preview, (i leave options on default) and viewing the game, I copy and paste the code produced into myspace blog. all seems fine to repeat that process... copy pgn data from ChessCircle.net, paste data into ChessFlash PGN Viewer Quick Publisher. view game, copy and past code into myspace blog and...

ok... You'll have to forgive me.

here's that link

http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&bID=525653534

and even though I went through the same process as before, it appears that when I go to 'preview' the blog, the second game appears broken, but upon posting... all seems fine as you can see in the link above. I'm not sure why the preview would look broken, but be fine, once it is in a true post. ::shrugs::

either way. Thanks again for all your hard work. Take Care & God Bless,

Piece Character Localization does not affect promotion

I use Dutch characters for the pieces (KDTLPp) but when you promote to queen on f8 it shows as: f8=Q in stead of f8=D

Fixed

Thank you for reporting this. I believe it is now fixed in the latest version 2.14. See:
http://www.glennwilsonchess.com/2009/10/localization-pawn-promotion-bug-...

You do not need to do anything to get the new version (unless you are running a local copy) other than perhaps refreshing your browser and /or clearing your browser cache.

Entering Null Move in variation lines.

The ChassFlash PGN player makes the most common error that many light PGN viewers do.
It can't recognise the "--" or "<>" Null Move in the PGN lines and displays the common error «Impossible or ambiguous move:(move) Possible moves: moves bla bla bla. Please correct the PGN file or report a defect if th PGN is correct.»

That's why I am here reporting this common silly error.
As a Chess player I strongly recommend to implement the Null Move, because this "do-nothing" move is extremely useful in the variations as it it used to show what is happing if a player does nothing.

I know that it is possible to obtain the same result of the Null Move playing a silly move and showing what will happen after a stupid ply.
But why to play a stupid move?

Furthermore the Null Move hides the philosophical question "what is my opponent going to do now? what is his plan? what should I do to stop him?" and the answer can be found only thinking this way: "if this will be his turn again, what will he do?".

I hope I was clear enough to show you the importance and the need of a Null Move implementation.
A suggestion is: Null Move is allowed ONLY AND EXCLUSIVELY in the variation lines, not in the mainline, because in the mainline and only in the mainline the rule "white then black the white" is forced; the Null Move means "do nothing", so is White to play again if White is playing or Black to play again if Black is playing.

Please answer.

Null Move

Null Move is an interesting concept but not part of the PGN standard. I have no plans to implement this at this time. ChessFlash is open source and you are free to have a go at implementing that yourself if you like.

Transparency

In the current version the flash object is always on top, causing problems with drop down menus falling behind the viewer. I tried to fix this by adding
< param name="wmode" value="transparent"> in the object code (fix according to this site).
That solves the problem but in Firefox this causes a strange side-effect: if you replay the moves by using the arrow keys of the keyboard you're stepping through the game by 2 plies at a time. In IExplorer en Chrome it works just fine.
Firefox seems to have a problem with this wmode parameter (just Google on "Firefox wmode bug").

just found this bug report, seems to be the same problem.

Transparency

I'm also having this problem

Some enhancements I'd like

Here are a few things I'd like to add.
The Viewer
Show error messages if can't find or load the pgn file at run time.
Show two different movetext selections simultaneously (one for main board, one for variation board)
At start, initialize the variation board to the first variation
Menu: User preferences (move highlighting on off, etc)
Menu:Load PGN, Save PGN
Menu:Load FEN, Save FEN
Autoplay mode
Add sound (voice annotation/commentary); turn on/off; volume control
Setup Mode
Automatically select/deselect tabs when clicking text
Add ability to jump to a puzzle position within a full game pgn so it could be both a puzzle and the full game.

The Server
Generic View any game page
Color Chooser for Publishing
Remember colors/preferences for Publishing
Categories
Rank (Popularity)
Game Search (by opening, user, players, etc)

bug, piece promotion

If you look at the game I posted, starting move 31. After the black pawn promotes, it turns into a White Queen. The color is corrected after a Queen move.

Bug Fixed.

That bug is now fixed in the current versions (including the one you are using). Thanks.

likesforests feedback

The following issues were identified by likesforest at our previous, test website. I'm logging them here with current status.

Update: June 7, 2008: FIXED in V0-046: now moves are bold commentary is not - Feedback #1 - (moderate) - It's sometimes hard to read the moves vs the annotation because they're the same color and weight. Chessbase uses a different color for annotations (navy blue by default) to help differentiate them.

Update: June 7, 2008: FIXED in V0-046: the selected variation turns red with the moves bolded (not new); now as a variation navigation aid, the moves stay bolded (but color reverts to default) when you select another variation - Feedback #2 - (moderate) - When there are several variations for a move, eg 7...Bb4, 7...c6, 7...Nb4, and 7...Be6 it would be better to put each one at the beginning of a new line (at least the first level of variations) to make them easier to read and understand. Move 26 is also hard to untangle. ;)
[I do want to eventually do more for this issue including user preferences/options for how to display the text, variations, text size, etc.].

FIXED - Feedback #3 - (minor) - The title looks nice, but the second line doesn't have as much info as we're used to. For example, "Philadelphia, 2007" or "chess.com, 2008" follow the standard format of (site), (date). "World Open" and "Online Chess" are less meaningful... although an argument could be made that "World Open, 2007" and "Online Chess, 2008" are fine ways to display it--the missing date is most important.

FIXED/WORKAROUND (link to PGN) - Feedback #4 - (minor) - It would be nice to have a "View PGN" button available. Perhaps I'm spoiled from chess.com but one of the nice features there is that I can quickly drop the game into Chessbase when someone asks for help analyzing it.

FIXED - Feedback #5 - (major) - In some places ChessFlash is eliminating spaces between words. For example, in the source pgn it's "may be able to" and "trap my queen". This ChessFlash-introduced typos make my annotations look less professional.

OPEN - Feedback #6 - (minor) - On chess.com you simply cut + paste the PGN rather than creating a PGN file and then uploading it. That shaves 45 seconds off the uploading process--although I still was done within a couple minutes.

Update: July 11, 2008: FIXED Feedback #7 - (minor) - Having a default height/width or options like "small", "medium", and "large" might help people not so used to thinking about how many pixels make up a webpage or screen (not an issue for me, just a thought).
[In the new Basic Publishing Dialog width and height are no longer options -- they are supplied automatically based on the orientation].

FIXED - Feedback #8: Apparently, ChessFlash does not support the PGN "FEN" option which allows you to begin at the middle or near the end of a game rather than at the beginning.[The problem was actually caused by commentary before the first move. That has been fixed].

FIXED - Feedback #9 (minor) - If no player names are present, perhaps we can omit the "? - ?" as it adds no information. Plus, it doesn't really look so nice on top of an otherwise good endgame study. I imagine the same thing would pop up when illustrating a tactic.

chess pieces more simple

very nice, but please make the pieces more simple like in a chess club.

Public domain or open pieces

If anyone is aware of other chess piece images that are in the public domain or freely available please let me know.

pieces

The free program Palview contains a lot of different pieces in different sizes. See the pieces. Those are GIF's created from True Type fonts, which are used in many other freeware programs. So I think you can use them without problems, but I'm not a expert in these manners
